Corporate Prayer
June 24th, 2009 by Andrew Drapper

The place and importance of corporate prayer can not be emphasised enough!

At times of need in the Old Testament, the children of Israel were often called together to pray as a group. When the church was under pressure in the New Testament, they would gather together and pray. The church throughout history has gathered to pray. We too must not neglect corporate prayer. Prayer as the gathered local church.

We must not confuse a short prayer of intersession in the church service with fervent corporate prayer. One person leading a prayer that most of the congregation are not even engaging with is not fervent corporate prayer.

So how do we go from where we are to where we NEED to be?

Probably step by step taking the congregation with you. If something happens that you can use as a spring board for change you may be able to move a great distance in one leap. If a prominent member of the church or the local community is murdered, war is declared or some other event that can be used to galvanise a response from the congregation, you may be able to call them to fervent prayer. But under most circumstances, it will be necessary to move the church slowly to this point.

Let’s look at some practical steps that we can take to move forward.
